Head to Bed
Poem: Head to Bed
Oh, look at the time
Off to bed with a rhyme in my head
‘I think loads I do, and I can’t help falling in love with life, the cosmos and ‘especially with you’
Review: Head to Bed
Well, I don’t know about you dear reader but I’m lost for words (that’s not good is it now is it as I’m supposed to be writing a review here!). I keep repeating the term ‘aww’ over and over. That is because I keep reading the poem over and over. It has warmed ‘the cockles. Of my heart that is, and I can’t help but smile. But who says ‘cockles” nowadays? And what on earth are they? Was it ever really said in the first place? The youth of now with their words tend to say using MLE lingo – (Multi cultural English) things like “Safe, that’s love”, or even “That’s’ deep, still” Would I use that sort of language dear reader? Love is love right? I could give it a go eh ‘fam’? But I digress. To be honest, I think I’m still blushing and beaming. Anyway, back to the poem.
Ok, so it’s bedtime for the poet.
Nightie night etc. But there’s rhyming activity taking place in their mind. I can only imagine that it never stops with the rhyming ‘for this and a rhyming for that’ with the ‘Roses are red, violets are blue’, blah blah blah ‘The cat sat on the mat etc’ We all know how it goes. I apologise dear reader for using the ‘cat’ rhyme again in another of my reviews here – it’s not very original, is it? I put it down to having been pleasantly, yes pleasantly thwarted by the poet’s words and I’m continuing to beam.
The poet admits to thinking a lot. But of course! Along with the thoughts there are the ‘feels’ too. That’s what poets do, to get the reader or audience member (if spoken word poetry) to think and to feel.
The poet goes on to talk about falling in love, with life and the universe. Pretty big subjects here. Beautiful, mesmerizing and more!
The poet has fallen in love with these three epic things. That’s lovely poet, and that’s nice. This is where the poet has unexpectedly caught me and that’s with the final line of the poem, ‘especially with you’ The poet has fallen in love with a person that they value higher than all the other incredible things. Wow and pow! I say to that (and yes, I’m continuing to beam)
Powerful word wizardry takes place here.
I can indeed say that I have been fortunate to have been exposed to word wizardry and performance when attending spoken word events and I continue to be inspired by the amazing spoken word poet/ artists today.
Dear reader, if you haven’t already, I would highly recommend going along to see a spoken word event.
A simple start to the poem with the rhyme ‘head to bed” then it grows into a huge observation and understanding of love. The poet has successfully charmed me. I feel blessed and cherished by this short and powerful poem. Poetry can sure say so much, and I don’t need to look at the time.
