Cry
Poem:Cry
For crying out loud
Don’t cry over spilled milk
Don’t cry tears of sorrow
Don’t cry for me driving you mad or for driving a Ford Cortina
Don’t even cry for Argentina
Cry tears of joy
Cry tears of laughter
As we’re here together and still living in our happily ever after
Review: Cry
The poet starts with firmly saying at the beginning of the poem to not get upset about something that has gone wrong and cannot be amended. A bit strongly put maybe but honest I suppose. It all depends on how it’s being said and to whom it’s being said to. Are they inebriated, been on ‘the sauce’ Would drunken words, if that’s the case, help or hinder the situation. Hmm. I read on to see.
The spilling of any liquid is indeed tricky and potentially dangerous if not cleared up and dealt with immediately. Think about it. One cannot ‘un spill’ something. But hey, one would hope there’s more milk in the fridge for it not to be a big deal. If there isn’t any milk then not to worry as at the tap of a button or a finger swipe on your phone, an online delivery service is at the ready. Waiting on a moped to zoom to the rescue is a faithful and speed loving minion. Hurrah to that right? Wrong! As it’s likely that the delivery driver is under pressure and is paid very badly. That’s enough to put you off your taco’s on wheels. (That’s another story for another time dear reader) If I didn’t like tacos before (which I didn’t) I certainly wouldn’t now. And why am I picking on tacos anyway? I prefer a bhaji or a beigel but not on wheels! I’m from the East Side of town, London that is, innit. I digress dear reader and I apologise.
Looks like the ‘spilled milk’ metaphor would need to be updated and re-worked to something like ‘no use crying over the burst tyre of the delivery driver’s moped as you could go down to the shop and get it yourself couldn’t you?’ A bit long winded maybe? Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue with ease. Never mind, I’ll politely ask the poet for a bit of help with it.
The hover craft has yet to be invented (I think?, I’ve not looked it up) but we do have drones I suppose. That could help with the fast movement of food? Those mini flying machines that are used in the military. Today it’s invading, tomorrow it’s transporting a hovering poppadom or pizza. Oh how the human race has evolved (!) Peace on earth and all that? Not quite.
The poet then goes on to say to not be crying tears of upset with not crying any tears of sorrow. Oh dear. What if the person that’s being spoken to is upset and needs to release tension by crying, probably needs a hug and a cup of tea too. Where’s the empathy here oh poet? Aren’t you lot meant to be sensitive souls? I read on to find out more. The poet sounds like they are almost apologising by admitting to driving their partner mad. But I would prefer it if they were to say sorry in a beautiful heart-warming melodic poetic manner. I’d forgive you in an instant if that were to be the case? The poet goes on about their car. A Ford Cortina? Oh, my that vehicle is as old as the Ark! It’s a classic, Is the poet more devoted to it than to his or her partner? I’m personally aware of the car model and yes, the original is a good-looking car. The model immediately after it however, not desirable, not eye candy at all. BUT dear reader this is not a motoring review for Top Gear magazine, I do apologise as I am here to review poems as you know.
It’s sounding as though there is a list of things that are not worth crying over that the poet has drawn up. I laugh when ‘Argentina’ is mentioned as it refers to the famous song that most know courtesy of famous Musical theatre composer, Andrew Llyod Webber with the song “Don’t cry for me Argentina. Hang on a minute. (I’m thinking to myself) Up until this point these are all tears of woe. Thankfully I continue to read on and the poet mentions joyful happy tears because the poet and his partner are together, they are united and I smile warmly at that. The retro rhyme of Ford Cortina with Argentina is fun. It’s a heartfelt warm read with a healthy dose of reality and love. There wont be any tears before bedtime after reading this.
