War

Poem: War

My desire is for a cease-fire

Embarrassing it would be if not so devastating and deadly

For peace all are here, distracted and still waiting

What is there to be celebrating?

Fortunate to wake in the morning

Where elbows are not touching wood

Has the request for the cessation of combat been misunderstood?

Has it always been this way?

We just know of it more

War is a business, a heartbreak and a chore

More than likely it will blow up the front and the back door

Faced with the suggestion of a truce

Would that be adhered to or will there be another reason to be fighting with a feeble excuse?

Nobody wins

Review: War

Like for many, peace is the wish of the poet.

Nice little punchy rhymes of ‘desire’ with ‘ceasefire’

‘devasting, waiting and celebrating’

‘touching wood and misunderstood’

‘chore and door’

Elbows not touching wood, says to me ‘be grateful to not be dead! You’re not touching elbows against the wood from inside a coffin. It does not appear that the poet is in the middle of a war zone but is in a physically comfortable position from afar to be able to have these thoughts and feelings without the rude and deadly interruptions of firing weapons and surrounding combat. It’s not the poet’s fault. To hear news of war is saddening wherever you are in the world. It’s interesting to hear the words of the poet’s observations of ‘all are here distracted and still waiting’ Distracted by what? The usual behaviours of working, paying bills, taking holidays, shopping online for ‘stuff’ and waiting for peace to just come along I suppose?

War will continue to revel in hatred. That is the ugly nature of it.

“Embarrassing’ I think, is an interesting word to use. No one likes to be embarrassed, do they? The people or should I say ‘monsters/dictators’ who want to pursue their objectives with choosing ‘war’ as an action to take, clearly do not think it’s embarrassing. What was the point of having wars in the past where they were recorded, if not to look at the patterns that were established, to therefore avoid the repetition of them? All that dying and suffering, all been in vain? Lessons not learnt? I think I’ll stop at that as it’s too painful to prod.

As the saying goes, “Where’s there’s a will…”

Humanity needs to establish a collective will in order to achieve peace.

I conclude with agreeing with the poet. When it comes to war ‘nobody wins’ and that is the fait acompli. That is how it is!
