Naughty Step Generation

Poem: Naughty Step Generation

One minute for every year of my life?

That’s quite some time…

I’ve reached a highly regarded vintage

I command respect

I demand a cushion for that step

I will learn my lesson

With some degree of comfort

Review: Naughty Step Generation

A comical title, the ‘naughty step generation’ There was indeed a trend in the early noughties for that sort of thing to take place!  Parents enlisted the help from a ‘first class’ child expert and T.V personality of a ‘super’ kind! Hurray for humanity right? Sitting on a step in the comfort and safety of home for 2 – 5 minutes makes sense for a child I suppose, but for a fully grown adult?

I don’t think that the character within the poem could have been a toddler during the early noughties to be met with this sort of T.V ‘discipline’ but I am sure they have been inspired and wants to apply it to their own lives! They have a conscious of some kind. They know they’ve done wrong and by the looks of it, they are seeing this ‘punishment’ as a way to appease their guilt, have peace of mind and maybe being a shortcut to heaven? Perhaps they are seeing it as a modern day ‘confession’ with no religion involved and not a priest in sight.

But will it work? They believe in it. Well, it worked for that expert and she clearly has a good brain and a good agent.

From what I’ve heard on the naughty step ‘grapevine’ once she fixed all ills occurring with the British kids, she took herself off to America and fixed some problematic children over there too. Thank goodness for her, eh? The world must be a better place right? How did humanity ever cope before she came along?

Were all kids dragged up instead of being brought up to be nice and polite?

Are the young people, and the big decision makers in society today, the result of the culture and upbringing that they were exposed to and had received? Nature and nurture and all that?..Oh dear…I think? I’ll stop there! I’m not going to get into a debate over the various generations of X,Y,Z, and baby boomers etc. I will indeed leave it there as it would be a very long and involved story for yet another time!

Talking or which,

The line of  ‘quite some time’  indicates to me that this character is not a youngster but ‘mature’ is definitely of a ‘certain age’ and is confident with the commanding and demanding of stuff.

This person is accepting of having done wrong, is willing to learn their lesson but on their own terms! I find that humorous.

Sounds good to me. If this becomes a disciplinary trend catches on I can see the sale of cushions as Christmas gifts rising and could be as popular as lingerie and novelty socks!

Of course, the posting on social media of this ‘trend’ would take place…  As always I would yawn at that, but in the meantime I have my own cushions. Comfort is crucial.
