Marbles

Poem:Marbles

You singing the same thing over and over again and again drives me slowly but surely round the rusty bend!
Marbles?
What are those?
I can’t remember but I’ve been told that I’ve lost them.
Pretty colours they were, again I’m told
What a shame, to them I could not hold
Trolly? I’ve gone right off mine
I now do the supermarket and ‘everything else’ shopping online
I order my wine
and in plenty of time
Eventually
I’m sure
I’ll be just fine
Glug Glug Glug

Review: Marbles

Hearing the repetitiveness of singing is taking its toll! Enough is enough!

Who or what is the poet addressing? A person, a radio or t.v jingle or a particular song that is continuously played somewhere at home or at work? It’s intrusive! How very annoying!

Depending on the singer, (I can think of a few lovely and few ropey ones too – but that’s another story for another time) the hearing of singing should be a delightful and uplifting experience but the kind of ‘singing’ or ‘song’ that the poet has been exposed to has led the poet to…outright madness and there’s no escape from it. There is a connection here and it cannot be severed. It must be tolerated. It’s either family life or the workplace or both? Oh dear It’s so intense. They can’t take it. So what do they do?

How does the poet cope?

The poet writes of course!

Using humour, the poet expresses what is going on psychologically with ‘going round the bend, the losing of marbles and going off their trolley but the poet does not reveal who or what is the cause of this discord. Linking the madness of ‘going off their trolly’ and not actually using a supermarket trolley anymore is a clever bit of storytelling and I get a clear picture of what the poet is doing to be able to cope. Some jog, hike up hills, go for long walks and walk their dogs too. The way in which the poet copes with the disruption is using the services of online shopping to their advantage with the supermarket shop and the ordering of wine too.

Avoiding the whole experience of a ‘big weekly/fortnightly shop’ altogether is a good move. Online services have come to save the sanity of the poet!

A colourful, and descriptive short piece of storytelling. An empowering and inoffensive  way to say “You’re driving me mad and this is what I am doing about it” Wine and words to the rescue here! I’m curious to see what will follow.
