Let’s get high

Poem:Let’s get high

I’ll blow you a kiss

To demonstrate my intention of showing

long lasting affection

I won’t forget to mention

That I think you are cute

Let’s be strapped together and jump using just the one parachute!

I‘ll make you feel alive

Join me in a thrilling tandem skydive

Let’s get high

Review: Let’s get high

When I read the title of the poem I immediately think the poet is inviting me to take some recreational drugs! What?! I am temporarily stunned yet curious.

But I don’t know you poet! What makes you think that I would be the sort of person who would take anything that wasn’t prescribed to me by my GP! in addition to my vitamin pills etc (yes, rattle me and I’ll shake, and no I won’t bore you dear reader with any details of a borderline “Holland and Barrett” lifestyle choice. Yes, I have dabbled, and I feel healthier just by reading the labels. (but that’s another story for when I get my boost of powdered turmeric, cardamom and a cup of loose hemp tea.) Yummy or yucky? Horses for courses and boats_a _floating, eh? Whatever takes your fancy? (Within reason of course)

I am then met with an arresting yet exciting first line of the poem where the poet wants to offer the reader a kiss. Wow, but an air kiss. Hmm? I view it as the poet is committing to a feeling of fondness. The person that this kiss is being aimed at is liked very much and the poet is in it for the long term. For the ‘blown kiss’ is not to be floating away into obscurity, but to me it says is to become a ritualistic behaviour to demonstrate the ‘long lasting affection’. Therefore, it cannot be not a one off. It would need to be repeated over and over again or taken up a notch in the future. Ooh!  And taking up a notch, the poet does indeed do! The future has presented itself with being near enough immediately here. The eager poet confidently suggests an interaction of closeness to take place which brings their two bodies together. Ooh again! It sounds like it could be something intimate and seductive. Is it more kissing? Holding hands? Hugging? Dancing? NO, It’s…JUMPING! The act of jumping together… for fun, it’s sky diving!

Whoa and wow! What an exhilarating, sexy yet seductive suggestion! If this was a poem delivered to me by the poet and I was on ‘terra firma’ I’d be wooed yes, undoubtedly. Thankfully I would not take this literally but as a metaphor if the intention of the poem was to get my attention and more? It has well and truly done the trick.

I’ve enjoyed the rhyming in this short poem

‘Intention’ with ‘affection’ and ‘mention’

‘Cute’ with parachute’

And ‘alive’ with ‘skydive’

In a nutshell, I feel safe

loved and admired

An impactful little poem. I’ll happily ‘get high’ with the poet and I wouldn’t be in a hurry to come back down.
