In search of the perfect cushion
From a colourful elephant and a couple of curious hedgehogs, to the humble sea creature that is the delightful little turtle, well I can say now that I have arrived. My quest for a cushion is now over – decision made, I am ‘There’.
A bit of a cryptic one you may ask? Could I be accused of going off on a wildlife tangent? Well not exactly. Back in November 2017 I was on a mission to find the ‘perfect cushion’ and my journey took me to Oxford Street in London’s West End where I visited John Lewis and prior to that, a month earlier I had visited Liberty of London where I was met with an array of floral and magnificent peacock cushion designs. Could I think to choose any design to ‘invest’ in? No, not at the time, I think I was probably in a state of ‘overthinking’ the issue so I came away from it for a while… but it was still there at the back of my mind, bubbling under the surface.
Like I’ve said, my quest for a cushion is over. My route led me to choosing words along with an illustration of a turtle as my final cushion design. This was a natural evolution for me after having produced a book of poetry with written cultural observations entitled, The Gathering.
Words are powerful and words are fun. I do like a good story and storytelling. I am partial to a spot of poetry now and then to do just that, to tell a story. I was playing with words one day and I discovered I had some scattered pieces of writing on a variety of digital devices as well as notepaper. It was then I came across my poem ‘There’, which is one of the poems I’ve included in The Gathering. Just as the poem says, “you didn’t see it coming did you?” as was the case for my final cushion choice, I didn’t see it coming and now here it is.
