Fools’ Goldfish
Poem: Fools’ Goldfish
Swimming around and around in a bowl
Swimming around and around in a bowl
Swimming arou…oh!
I yawn
Many talk
Many gossip
Many gawp
What were their names?
Harry and Mackerel?
Or was it
Hegan and Marrie?
Quite possibly?
My memory refuses to be serving me
with these two little fishes across that big pond
A distorted trend
Neither one ever likely to be your friend
Tipped down the pan and around the U-bend is what one can guarantee.
The reality is the flushed away ceremony of a flawed fantasy
Glug glug!
Glug glug!
Review: Fools’ Goldfish
Goldfish swimming around in a bowl. Pretty, yes but not very exciting after a prolonged time watching the same thing going on and on, over and over again. The goldfish aren’t likely to swim holding fins or burst into song. It’s easy for the observer to be bored and it appears to be boring for the for the goldfish too.
That’s it. Not much else to say. Conclude review… Hang on, the poet has observed and looked into these ‘goldfish’ a little bit more and has given them ‘an easily forgotten and easily replaced status’ akin to those who demonstrate behaviours of observing people in the public eye. (I’m yawning now at this)
The poet is bored at the start but is aware of the behaviours of others doing the staring, the gawping, and the gossiping.
I laugh out loud when the poet is attempting to recall the names of the goldfish. . “Harry and Mackerel?” , a funny fishy reference. Clearly they have not made any cultural impact on the poet’s life. The poet has, pardon the pun, bigger fish to fry (sorry, I couldn’t help but say that) Also referenced is how it is said that goldfish have poor memories, and the poet also has a poor memory when thinking of the ‘small fish’ across the other side of the Atlantic ocean. It is clear to me that the poet is thinking of a certain royal union, is not focusing on them but the behaviour of those who have formed an interest in them.
Concentrating efforts and wasting time and energy on those who are distant and do not feature at all in the lives of those who are interested in them?
What does that say?
Has it always been thus?
What is the punchline to all this?
Flushed away and forgotten about, I think.
‘Following’ celebrity for the sake of celebrity is not everyone’s cup of tea.
Great title “fools’ goldfish”
I’m more interested in actual goldfish and I like the names ‘Splish and Splash’ if I were to have any goldfish in the future.
“Fools Gold” meaning: A mineral that is found in rock and looks like gold but is not valuable or something that you think will be very pleasant or successful but is not.
Take from that what you wish. Glug glug. Glug glug!
