Brim

Poem: Brim

He’s not my mate , bruv or even my cous

I love him because of what it is that he does

I listen very keenly to his spoken word

with a crystal clear message that takes me as high as a bird.

It’s not absurd to want to spend more of my time with him. He fills my mind with fun

and inspiration. It’s taken right to the brim.

He’s my word wizard chum and bro you know

And I won’t in any time soon be turning away or letting go

Review : Brim

What a delightful rhyming start to the poem. I’m in!

I’m instantly intrigued, and it doesn’t take long at all to discover what it is that this guy does. Words words words! The poet loves him because of the words that he speaks! By the sounds of it the poet has found a kindred spirit perhaps. He could be a communicator or a performer of some kind.

A teacher? A musician? Or he could well be an impressive spoken word artist?

The poet is lifted high on an intellectual wordy journey with him. Wow!

His mind and intelligence is what the poet has tapped into. Intelligence can be seen as very attractive, seductive, and  very cool indeed.

It’s then clear that they are close with terms to refer to close friendship such as chum and bro. Although the words mate, bruv and were used at the start of the poem but it appears that the poet has used those slang words to gain the reader’s attention, and it has worked with me. I’m hooked. Maybe the first words are seen as too generic to describe him?  ‘My word wizard chum and bro” sounds more of an elevated and unique status. Wow again! He must be good! I love how the poet has declared that they have committed to the friendship with not turning away or letting go.

The rhyming throughout has delightfully taken through what the person means to the poet.

“not even my cous… with what it is that he does”

“spoken word… as high as a bird”

“my time with him… right to the brim”

 “bro…letting go”

Upon reading this short poem I cannot help but smile. It’s full of admiration, respect and love. A great piece of storytelling with rhythm.
